Duemilanove Salento IGT
Made by Tenute Mater Domni 2009 13%
LCBO Grapebrands
A jewel from a surprising region. Negroamaro comes in all shapes and sizes, Ive reviewed the cheapest on the LCBO, here is a treat from Grapebrands.
Nose: Very interesting licorice, salt, smoke, black tea. Back fruits lurk in the background. There is some sulfur but after that blows off the intrigue remains. Lots of Character.
Palate: low tannins, mid acid, juicy, full bodied. Dirt, stewed red fruit and a sapid note that one finds in Pinot Noir.
Finish: fairly short but Juicy red fruit, earthy. Lovely. Replays of licorice.
Would drink again. Hold no more than 5 years. Very food friendly.

Piedmonte, 2009. Italy.
Price: $ 9.95 13.0% Alcohol/Vol.
By: Etablissements Paul Boutinot
Piedmonte is home to some of Italy’s most expensive and long lived wines. However, there are classy cheap wines to be had, like this one.
‘Light and juicy indeed’, as promised by the label. Dark berries, and a touch of smoke and pepper on the nose. Same for the palate. Nice, juicy, uncomplicated.
Design snobs will appreciate the sharp label, rather easy on the eyes and just enough nostalgia to make it work.
Definitely a wine for BBQ’s: very decent for the price, easy to drink, interesting enough, and everyone will like it.

A curiosity that delivers surprising decent quality.
Nose: Dusty, cassis and surprising fancy violet notes.
Palate: follows the dusty theme ( this grows in a desert, after all), some dark berries, a little lean, mid acid, mid tannins (so a decanting doesnt hurt).
Finish: meh, a little dusty, earthy.
Decent quality for the price.
Italy, Puglia
$16.95 (588962)
From the south of Italy, a nice cheap treat. Pizza and BBQ kinda wine. One of the cheapest bottles in the LCBO. Yet it will surprise you.
Nose: Herbaceous, some black fruit. Nothing too special, but its decent
Palate: follows nose. A bit hollow (meaning needs more juice), but well made enough, medium tannins, not too ripe.
Finish: Short, a touch herbs.
Overall, decent for what you pay. Available everywhere, part of LCBO’s general list.
Italy, Abruzzo
by Farnese Vini Srl
$7.95 (621912)
Another cheap and cheerful offer from Italy. Wont make you any friends, but wont make people wanna shank you. Maybe the morning after, but you should be long gone by then.
Nose: Green, medicinal, a little red fruits (red plum, rasp).
Palate: High acid, mid tannins, some red fruit (plum). Decent body. Winey in a not that great way, but grows into you.
Finish: meh, not all that great.
Overall? decent for the price, but dont bring to someones home as a gift. Spend a little more and pick something else.
Good for cooking, though, or a house party where no-one will remember the wine.
